“The academy was formed with the vision of creating a world-class footballing environment to give aspiring young males and females a chance to reach their goal of becoming professional footballers.”
We do this by placing large emphasis on skill based detail and specific functional football movements.
Players progress based on ability not age.

Isolated individual focus in small player coach ratio sessions 6:1
Creation of an environment where mistakes are viewed as learning opportunities through positive and supportive coaching behaviours – e.g. corrective intervention rather than critique
Provide a safe place free of judgement for children and families to express themselves
Explicit teaching of expectations, dispositions and the behaviours required to maximise learning including; commitment, punctuality, attention to detail, effort, respect, pride, confidence not arrogance and responsiveness to feedback
In session – creation of sessions that allow for deliberate practice; including modelling and guided practice/questions of the “why”, “what” and “how”
Focus of feedback on process and effort, in order to develop a growth mindset. Instead of “well done”, players will be told why their action was beneficial to the team. Similarly, players will be told why they made a mistake and how to rectify it
Direct intention to develop the technical details allowing for easier transition into an U12 environment
Age and level specific planning providing the right challenge to each player according to his/her development stage
At WVFA we base our training methods on the use of small sided games and Funino Football. ‘Funino’ literally means ‘Fun’ and ‘Children’ and encourages the players to develop a love for the game whilst also stimulating game intelligence, perception, imagination and creativity. Involving young players in small sided, 3 vs 3 games means they have more touches on the ball and also allows better all-round development as there are no fixed positions. Each player has to defend and attack. There is lots of goalmouth action and every player gets to play a starring role.
“Winning is the byproduct of effective development”
Back foot, open stance, weight of touch, direction of touch, both feet, use of other surfaces
Players learn to be aware of the Ball, Opposition, Team Mates, Target, Space (BOTTS)
All of these things are an evolution of great scanning and spatial awareness.
Use of both feet, different surfaces of the feet, turns, beating a defender, driving at a defender, driving into space
Tricks , turns , Juggling, creativity
Close down with purpose, show one way, body shape – side on, timing, balance, Steal or force an error
Protect the space behind you.
For those who do not go onto pursue this sport we aim to, at a minimum, have developed great young people to enter the young adolescent phase of their life.
If we are going to achieve this , coaching development must be high on our agenda, which is why we aim to have the highest educated and experienced coaches , giving the kids the best opportunity with the best coaches available.
